Session Abstract:
College in the Schools, Advanced Placement, Post Secondary Enrollment Options and other concurrent enrollment programs for high school students have had a major impact on high schools and colleges. This round table discussion will include college professors, administrators, and high school teachers who have had experience with concurrent enrollment programs. A wide range of opinions exist regarding high school students and college credit courses and we’ll spend time examining the politics surrounding this complex topic. Special emphasis will be made on a human anatomy and physiology course offered through the U of Minnesota’s College in the Schools program.

Summary of Proposal

My session will address my chosen National Standard by:
I do not have a chosen National Standard

Session Abstract:
This session will focus on developing a dialogue between high school and college biology instructors with a goal of developing an informal set of learning outcomes in reference to biological evolution. More specifically, what should graduating seniors know about evolution prior to entering a college-level biology course? Other topics to be discussed include favorite curriculum materials and instructional strategies used to foster student understanding and interest in biological evolution.

I agreed to help The Society of College Science Teachers (SCST) plan two one-hour sessions at the local NSTA Regional Conference here in Minneapolis next October 29 – 31.  SCST tries to schedule at least two sessions at regional NSTA conferences for college instructors and also interested high school teachers.  We’ll probably be scheduled for Saturday, October 31st.

For one session I would like to have a roundtable discussion on evolution education, and more specifically, what we as college biology instructors expect incoming freshman to know about evolution.  We would then continue with what curriculum and instructional strategies we use in our courses and what we hope student learn.  We’ll include lots of time for questions and discussions.

Randy and Jay have already agreed to help (Thanks!).  Who else wants to join the panel of experts?  It will look great on your activity reports!  For our session, I think we could meet about 30 minutes prior to our talk just to coordinate ideas.  Very easy stuff.

ALSO — if you know a graduate student, tenure track faculty member, etc.,  who should do a presentations for a professional organization, this would be an excellent forum. Let me know and I’ll include them in the proposal.

For the second session I’m going to do a round-table discussion on College in the Schools, Advanced Placement, PSEO, and other programs that offer college credit to high school students.  We’ll focus on politics, quality control, money, curriculum, etc.   Let me know if you are interested in this topic as well.

 Thanks for the help.
