SPEAKERS
Possible for Spring 10
Yoji Shimizu - Immunology - Alyson's recommendation
Yoji Shimizu
I’m teaching a U of M anatomy and physiology course that is associated
with several local high schools. Alyson Purdy, one of my teachers at Hopkins
High School, gave me your name as a possible guest speaker for our course.
Twice a year all the high schools in the program come to the U of M for a day
presentations and tours. We typically meet in the Mayo Auditorium and hear
talks from U of M scientists.
Would you interested / available to talk to about 300 high school students on
April 22nd? It would take place sometime between 930 and 1130 and should
require minimal effort. Typically the speakers present for 30 to 40 minutes
and then field questions. This is a very bright group of high school kids – most
are destined for science careers.
If you are not available, could you recommend someone else? Immunology
would be great topic.
Thanks.

Dr. ,,,
I’m a Professor in the College of Education and Human Development and
teach freshman level human anatomy and physiology and am working with a few
local high schools as part of the U of M’s College in the Schools program.
In this program, students are taking human anatomy and physiology in their
high schools, and visit the U of M twice a year to hear talks from U of M Professors.
Judy Beniak, U of M’s Health Careers Office, recommend you for a speaker
for this group of high school students. She said that you were doing very innovative
work in neuroimaging. The talk would be targeted at high-achieving high
school students, and should not require too much preparation on your part.
The talk would take place on the morning of Tuesday, April 21st.
I think the College in the Schools can offer you a bit of a stipend, but it’s
minimal. However, the kids are very inquisitive and make for a great audience.
If you can not commit to this talk, I would appreciate a name or two of colleges
who might be interested. The key is that they must be good classroom
instructors and be able to talk to a auditorium of high school students.
Thanks for the help

RE: Looking for a speaker - April 21st
Dr. Kelvin Lim forwarded me your names as potential "good speakers" for
a
group of 100 to 200 high school students.
Quick background: I teach entry-level human anatomy and physiology to
freshman here at the U of M, and we have several local high schools also
offering the course through our "College in the Schools" program.
The high
school students come to the U of M twice a year to hear speakers and
hang-out on our campus.
These students are very bright. Some of them will be here next year as
undergraduates and some will be here in 4 or 5 years as graduate students.
I'm looking for a speaker to "wow" these students with cutting edge
research
that is happening here at the U of M. Ideally, a 30 to 40 minute talk
followed by questions. The key is that the talk would not require a lot of
preparation, but it does require someone who can talk to bright 18 year old
students.
Date: Tuesday, April 21st - in the morning.
(Dr. Lim is at a conference this date, that's why he forwarded your names.)
I think we have a small stipend, too. But the key is that you must enjoy
presenting your research to bright kids.
We'll be doing presentations twice a year for the next several years, so
even if you can't present this year, please let me know if you are
interested for next year. I'm also looking for more names to add to the
list - so please forward me any names of people you think would be good for
this project.
All of your areas of research look like great fits for this audience.
Thanks for your help
Murray Jensen.

Hi Murray,
It sounds like great fun! Unfortunately I'm away at a conference that
entire week.
I'd like to suggest several colleagues who also do brain imaging studies:
1. Angus MacDonald - does work in schizophrenia angus@umn.edu
2. Jon Grant - does work in gambling - grant045@umn.edu
3. Katie Cullen - pediatric depression - rega0026@umn.edu
4. Jeff Wozniak - fetal alcohol and tbi - jwozniak@umn.edu --no for Spr 09

I am just reminding you to look into a talk on Diabetes Research at the
University of Minnesota.
Thanks for taking interest. I would be glad to present.
Peace out!
