Prevention of the Disease
THE
DOCTOR'S ROBE
- Since the
physicians did not know what caused the plague, but they did know it was very
contagious, they wore this strange suit shown below to prevent catching the
disease.
- The nose of
this costume was supposed to act as a filter. It was filled with
materials doused with perfume and disinfectants.
- In the beak
they put very strong smelling compounds such as vinegar and sweet oils to
counteract the horrible stench of the dead and dying victims of the
plague.
SOME CRAZY
WAYS USED TO TREAT THE PLAGUE INCLUDED:
- Bathing
in human urine.
- Placing
dead animals in the home.
- Chopping a snake up everyday.
- Trying
to fall asleep on the left side of the bed.
- Not
exercising.
- Not
eating any deserts.
- Wearing
human excrement.
The Plague does has a
vaccine. It lasts for about six months. If caught early, the plague
is easily treated. The best way of preventing the Bubonic Plague is better
sanitary conditions. Some of these conditions and precautions
include:
- controlling rat
populations using rodenticide
- fumigating ships using
hydrocyanic gas before arriving at the port
- isolating the Bubonic
Plague victims as soon as diagnosed
- separating facilities
used for livestock
A FEW QUESTIONS:

people insist on wearing such a silly costume during the Plague
epidemic?
2. Why did some people stop exercising
during the Plague?
